We Are Not This Body: Scott Dickson
January 17, 2014 - February 22, 2014
Plug Projects begins 2014 with “We Are Not This Body”, a solo exhibition of Kansas City-based artist Scott Dickson. For this exhibition, Dickson takes the audience on a trek through repurposed narratives as he searches for transcendence in the natural world. By meticulously inlaying fragments of found postcards, Dickson re-contextualizes his own experiences through the messages, mementos, and celebrated destinations of others. The intimate collages and sculptures he presents emerge as contemplation of time, both as fleeting experiences and moments of pause.
In 2013, Dickson and his wife embarked on a 2,200 mile, fourteen state hike of the Appalachian Trail. The pieces on view at Plug Projects address the spiritual confrontations with nature that occurred along the way, and begin to organize his experiences before and after this adventure. For Dickson, postcards have become a symbol for his transient life and as objects, he finds they “are alive with the scent of purpose for the moment.” The process of cutting and piecing together depictions of places and landmarks destabilizes and shifts their histories, temporarily merging them with those of the artist and the viewer. The resulting mosaics present both new realities and a fresh perspective on a discarded world of postcard images that still exists in the dusty drawers of our collective memory.
Scott Dickson was born in the suburbs of Chicago and graduated from the University of Kansas (2007) with a BFA in Painting and received his MFA from Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 2009. He has exhibited in Philadelphia, Chicago (MDW Fair with Plug Projects), Kansas City, and at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art in Omaha. His work is published both online and in print, most recently in Age of Collage, Contemporary Collage in Modern Art, a publication by Berlin-based Gestalten. www.stateofscott.com
